Fire Codes
Gainesville Fire Resuce (GFR) has established and enforces a set of rules and standards designed to support fire prevention and safety in the City of Gainesville. This includes but is not limited to regulations related to fire inspections, land clearing, open burning activities and personal burning and grilling devices.
Inspections and Fees
Please call the City Finance Dept. at 352-334-5024 to pay your inspection fee.
The Risk Reduction Bureau of Gainesville Fire Rescue is charged by City Ordinance to conduct fire inspections in the City of Gainesville in order to reduce life and safety risk occurrences. There is a fee associated with these mandatory inspections. The fee schedule for these services is outlined in the City of Gainesville's Ordinances Appendix A Schedule of Fees, Rates, and Charges.(PDF, 1MB)
Open Burning for Personal Use
Open outdoor burning in the City of Gainesville is prohibited except for outdoor fires contained in an appropriate patio and wood burning devices or in barbecue grills, smokers, or other devices designed specifically for cooking (more on safety regulations related to BBQ grills on balconies below).
Open Burning for Personal Agriculture and Land Clearing
Agriculture, forest operations, or land-clearing burns must be authorized by permit. For questions regarding burning in the City of Gainesville, please call the Risk Reduction Bureau at 352-334-5065. For burn permits outside the city limits, contact the Division of Forestry at 352-395-4951.
Grills on Balconies
Hibachi, gas-fired grills, charcoal grills or other similar devices used for cooking, heating, or any other purpose should not be used or stored on any balcony may not be operated under any overhanging or within 10 feet (3 meters) of any structure.
