Capture- SE 4th Street.png

The SE 4th Street corridor is a collector roadway which serves existing local businesses and residents. It also provides access from southeast Gainesville to the Downtown area from Williston Road to the recently revitalized Depot Avenue. The stormwater treatment facilities will also include amenities appropriate for the adjacent rail-to-trails bike path and the residential area. The Sweetwater Branch culvert underpass failed during the 2004 hurricanes, which impact this corridor. Therefore it is currently proposed to be replaced with a higher capacity underpass. The primary objective is to reconstruct SE 4th Street from Depot Avenue to Williston Road

Project Updates

January 2022

Good news! Work has resumed on the SE 4th Street Reconstruction project. Northbound and southbound lanes are now open for travel. Please anticipate short-term closures as construction activities continue. The current anticipated completion of the project is summer 2022.

September 2021

The SE 4th Street corridor serves residents and local businesses in SE Gainesville, providing direct access to Williston Road and downtown Gainesville. The original contractor is unable to complete the project, and the bonding company for the project is responsible for hiring a new contractor, which will happen at no additional costs to the city. A new timeline for the project is currently unknown, but it is anticipated that the project will take another six months to complete once a new contractor mobilizes the construction site. We will provide another update in the future once the new timeline for completion is known.

August 2021

Construction is anticipated to be completed Spring 2022.

June 2020

The proposed roadway improvements include two (2) new travel lanes, sidewalk, cycle track, stormwater ponds and drainage system.

Phase II roadway work is ongoing to construct the northbound travel lane. Traffic is currently open to northbound travel only. Depot Park will continue to be accessible from Depot Ave.

Once the new northbound lane is completed, Phase III will begin to construct the new southbound lane. During this Phase, traffic will continue to be open to northbound travel only. Depot Park will continue to be accessible from Depot Ave.

The current anticipated completion of the project is Fall 2020.

July 2019

Beginning the week of July 8, 2019, the Public Works Department will begin the reconstruction of SE 4th St roadway between Depot Ave and Williston Road.

The phase 1 traffic control plan as shown below depicts a full closure at the Sweet Water Branch Creek to allow for the installation of a very large box culvert. This is a major undertaking and it can only be done with the roadway is completely closed. Local traffic will be able to reach their homes from Depot Ave and Williston Road. Through traffic will need to use Williston Road to bypass the construction area. Travelers should expect a variety of traffic configurations over the course of the project to facilitate the work.

March 2019

The Public Works Department brought forth the bid award for the reconstruction of S.E. 4th Street on November 16th, 2017.  At that meeting, the City Commission approved the recommendation to award the project but also directed the Public Works Department and GRU to underground the existing overhead utilities.  The existing overhead facilities to be relocated include electric distribution facilities owned by GRU, and communication facilities owned by AT&T and Cox.

The utility work will be completed to the point where the Contractor can begin work within the next 30 days.  The project is estimated to take 390 days to complete.

August 2018

The design phase and construction procurement for this project was completed in the Fall of 2017. While approving the bid award to the selected Contractor, the City Commission also directed the conversion of the existing overhead utilities to underground. GRU started this process earlier this year and should be completed in the near future. Roadway construction will begin as soon as the utility work is finished and last approximately 12 months.
