Edible Groves

What is an edible grove?

An edible grove is land owned by the City of Gainesville with food-bearing trees and plants available to residents. A variety of flora that are well adapted to our local environment are planted and maintained by the city for the benefit of our neighbors.   

Why is the city planting edible groves?

Edible groves improve access to healthy, locally grown food for all Gainesville neighbors. Other benefits the edible groves include:

• increasing the canopy,
• increasing species diversity,
• lowering the heat-island effect,
• absorbing carbon dioxide,
• climate change mitigation,
• producing oxygen we breathe,
• creating more beautiful green spaces throughout our community, and
• providing neighbors with a space to reflect and nurture their connection with nature.
