RTS fare-free program to require ID cards as of March 1

Beginning March 1, riders eligible for the RTS Fare-Free Transit Program must present an RTS identification card to ride at no cost. The transit program offers free bus fares for RTS passengers 65 and older and those 18 and younger. RTS ID cards are available at no charge. Individuals can apply on-line for a digital ID card at www.go-rts.com. Physical ID cards can be obtained at 34 SE 13th Road.

During the 1800s to the 20th Century, African Americans have made significant contributions to Black life from the early days of the abolitionist movements, the reconstruction, the Harlem Renaissance and the Civil Rights movement.

Climate Action

Beginning with the selection of a chief climate officer in January 2023, the City of Gainesville looks to bring together its climate initiatives and get residents involved.

Choice Neighborhood Initiative

In September 2023, the City of Gainesville and the Gainesville Housing Authority (GHA) were awarded a $500,000 Choice Neighborhoods Planning Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). This grant will be used to create a plan to redevelop and revitalize neighborhoods in east Gainesville.

UF Transit Services Agreement

In March 2024, University of Florida officials notified City of Gainesville leaders of their plans to let the current contract for RTS bus service expire on June 30, 2024 without renewal. Instead, UF officials proposed a month-to-month agreement with the City, beginning July 1 (as they explore other transportation options).
