Cold Night Shelter Program Extended Jan. 22-28

City of Gainesville officials anticipate severe weather conditions, including temperatures below 45 degrees Fahrenheit during evening hours, Wednesday, Jan. 22-Tuesday, Jan. 28. The anticipated temperatures will lead to the activation of the city's Cold Night Shelter (CNS) Program, and it is expected to remain in effect until overnight low temperatures rise above 45 F.

City of Gainesville offices, facilities and parks will reopen tomorrow, Jan. 23. Regional Transit System buses have resumed regular service except for Santa Fe College-oriented routes. (Routes 10 and 23 continue with reduced service; No service for Routes 76 and 78 at this time.)

With our area under both a Freeze Warning and a Winter Storm Warning, the offices of the City of Gainesville will be closed tomorrow, Jan. 22. Regional Transit System buses will run on reduced service through 10 a.m. at which time a safety assessment will be made and further service could be suspended.

Vandal sentenced for threatening a public servant, property damage

The individual arrested for committing several acts of vandalism at Gainesville City Hall and the Old Library Building has been sentenced to nine months in jail and three years of probation. He also is required to compensate the city for $15,169 in damages, , and has been banned from City Hall and the Old Library Building.

Gainesville announces new RTS contract with the University of Florida

The City of Gainesville and UF have announced a new bus service contract that will continue the university’s prepaid bus fare program through mid-2027.UF will increase payments from $84 per bus hour to $88.35. In return, RTS will work with UF to collect additional ridership data, with passenger-counting equipment installed on all buses.

Gainesville receives federal award to fund new EV charging stations

The funds will enable the city to build 47 new Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations throughout the area; the dual-port stations would be capable of charging as many as 94 EVs at the same time. In the coming months, the city will secure a private contractor for the project. Following design and site improvement work in 2026, installation of the charging stations should begin in 2027.
