City of Gainesville officials will unveil new street signs for 8th Avenue in memory of the late local civil rights leader, Charles S. Chestnut III, at an upcoming ceremony.
When: Tuesday, Dec. 12 at 8 a.m.
Where: Northwest Eighth Avenue at Northwest First Street
Gainesville City Commissioners voted Thursday, Dec. 7 to dual name the portion of Northwest Eighth Avenue between Northwest Sixth Street and Waldo Road after Chestnut, who died Dec. 4 at age 83. Chestnut was the spouse of current City Commissioner Cynthia Moore Chestnut, and was a former Alachua County commissioner and the first Black member elected to the Alachua County School Board.
A public funeral service will also be held Monday, Dec. 18 at 1 p.m. at the Phillips Center (3201 Hull Rd.).
