Celebrate Earth Day in Gainesville with a series of fun events and activities! For kids, we have an Earth Day Art Contest. For adults, the Earth Day Recognition Awards honor our neighbors, local businesses and city staff who are working to make our city a better place. Then join us for on Earth Day, April 22, at 10 a.m. for a proclamation, the awards ceremony and a tree giveaway at Martin Luther King Jr. Center!

Earth Day Art Contest for First through Fifth Grade Students

The City of Gainesville invites students to participate in our Earth Day poster contest. Students in first through fifth grade are encouraged to create a poster depicting what Earth Day means to them.

Earth Day Recognition Awards

Help us celebrate local champions by nominating someone for the Earth Day Recognition Awards in one of six categories. 

Community Awards

1. Community Impact Award – Recognizing an individual or organization that has significantly contributed to local environmental efforts

2. Local Business Award – Honoring a local business that demonstrates leadership in eco-friendly practices, waste reduction, or economic development initiatives

3. Youth Sustainability Award – Recognizing a young person or student making an impact in environmental advocacy projects

City Staff Awards

4. Transportation Champion Award – Honoring a bus driver for outstanding service in transportation

5. Environmental Leadership Award – Recognizing a city staff member for implementing impactful environmental and resilience projects

6. Policy & Advocacy Award – Celebrating a city staff member for advancing environmental policy
