Contributions of past and present Indigenous peoples to be recognized

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Oct. 7, 2022) – The City of Gainesville, the Indigenous Peoples’ Task Force and community partners invite all neighbors to upcoming events celebrating the vibrant culture, traditions and history of the first inhabitants of the land.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day ceremony

When: 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10

Where: City Hall Plaza, 200 E. University Avenue

Mayor Lauren Poe will proclaim Monday as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Gainesville during a brief ceremony recognizing the contributions and resilience of Indigenous peoples including the Potano, part of the Timucua Nation, who once inhabited North Central Florida. The reading of the Indigenous Peoples’ Day proclamation will be followed by musical performances.

Museum Nights

When: 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11

Where: Harn Museum of Art, 3259 Hull Road

Art and culture across Latin and Indigenous America will be presented through tours, activities and dance.

Indigenous Peoples’ Celebration

When: 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sat., Oct. 15

Where: City’s Morningside Nature Center, 3540 E. University Avenue

The event will include performances by dancers and drummers, and a living history of the Potano and Timucuan peoples.

• Please note the ceremonial leaders have asked that attendees not photograph nor record any video of the blessing of the land, and of the native language and song performance.

The events are free and open to the public, and support the City’s vision of equity, inclusion and access to diverse cultural and arts locations, facilities and programs of interest to all neighbors.
