City of Gainesville officials and community leaders invite neighbors to register online for the inaugural Gun Violence Prevention Summit, Choose Peace: Gun Violence Must Cease. The summit is scheduled Sunday and Monday, Aug. 6-7 at the Hilton University of Florida Conference Center.
The first day is for community input. Dinner will be provided for those who register. This day will have a panel discussion followed by breakout sessions, a resource fair featuring community organizations, and a youth town hall. Registration for Community Day is available online. Those who wish to register by phone may call 352-393-8587.
The second day is a workshop for elected officials and professionals in the field. The public is welcome to attend and observe these discussions between stakeholders, but the goal is to enhance local government preparedness and heighten future collaborative strategies. Scribes will take minutes for entry into the official record.
The summit is designed to bring together area youth, young adults, parents, educators, public safety and mental health providers, community-based organizations, members of the faith community and neighbors to work toward solutions to end gun violence in the community.
The material in these sessions will include violent content and some profane language. Portions of the discussion may be emotionally and intellectually challenging, particularly for young people. Mental health resources will be available onsite for those who would like additional support. The intent of this event is to create a space where participants can engage thoughtfully together.
The summit is free and open to the public. More information is available online.
