2023 Rosa Parks Day event

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Nov. 28, 2023) ‒ Local leaders, along with members of the Rosa Parks Quiet Courage Committee, invite all neighbors to celebrate the legacy of Rosa Parks at an upcoming ceremony.
When: 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1
Where: Rosa Parks Transfer Station, 700 SE 3rd St.
The annual event commemorates the date – Dec. 1, 1955 – when the civil rights activist refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama bus. Her actions sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, led by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and helped fuel the Civil Rights Movement and the end of racial segregation.
Scheduled to speak at the event are Gainesville Mayor Harvey Ward; Gainesville City Commissioners Cynthia Chestnut and Desmon Duncan-Walker; Rev. Milford Griner, president and founder of the Rosa Parks Quiet Courage Committee; Evelyn Foxx, president of the NAACP Alachua County Branch; and Rodney Long, president and founder of the MLK, Jr. Commission of Florida, among others.
